The First Asian Symposium on Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology and the First Enlarged Editorial Board Conference of the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AJPS) were successfully held in Shenyang on July 28–30, 2007. The symposium was cosponsored by the Editorial Department of the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Chinese Medicine Technical International Development Association (Hong Kong), the Chinese Society of Particuology, the Nagai Foundation Tokyo and Shenyang Pharmaceutical University. The three editors-in-chief of AJPS (Prof. Fude Cui, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, Prof. Yoshiaki Kawashima, Aichi Gakuin University and Prof. Paul W. S. Heng, National University of Singapore) chaired the symposium. Mr. Tsuneji Nagai, the associate chairman of the International Pharmaceutical Society and chairman of the "Preparatory Committee for Alliance of Asian Journal of Pharmaceutics", Mr. Dequan Ren, Former deputy commissioner of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) of China, Mr. Chunfu Wu, Chairman of Liaoning Pharmaceutical Association and president of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, and Mrs. Ting Sun, chief editor of the Hong Kong Asiamed Publishing House attended the symposium and gave important presentations.  Mr. Tsuneji Nagai introduced the present state of the "Alliance of Asian Pharmaceutical Science" and expressed his particular support to AJPS, hoping that it can become an official Journal of the "Alliance of Asian Pharmaceutical Sciences" and recorded by SCI in the near future. Mr. Dequan Ren gave a lecture on "The Current Situation of the Pharmaceutical Industry in China". Prof. Chunfu Wu welcomed all the participants which included 120 from Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, England and Canada. About 200 of the participants were from the mainland of China. Most of the participants were from universities, institutes, pharmaceutical companies and hospitals. 

    There were two special reports, 37 invited and general lectures, 20 industrial reports and product introductions, and 52 poster presentations at the conference. The symposium created an environment for in-depth, informed discussions for all the participants, presentation of recent achievements and new development trends in the field of pharmaceutical science in Asia. Moreover, 12 excellent papers were selected from young scientists and students who had won the "Nagai Award". Mr. Tsuneji Nagai issued the certificates to them. During the closing remarks, certificates of appointment were issued to the editorial board members of the AJPS for the period of 2006–2008. In summary, this conference allowed all the pharmaceutical experts in Asia to come together in one place.

    In the meantime, the First Enlarged Editorial Board conference of the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences was held and 21 of the editorial members attended the meeting and there was intense discussion about "how to develop AJPS". Mr. Zhonggui He, assistant editor of the AJPS, described the submission and acceptance of manuscripts during the past year. The editorial members also discussed the present shortcomings of the journal and they promised to do their best to improve the AJPS, in the hope that it will soon be recorded by the SCI. 

    Furthermore, it was decided to hold the Asian Symposium on Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology every two years. The second symposium will be in 2009.
